Book Two Unhappily Ever After...

After learning their actions in Oz have had grave consequences, Wesley and Tay return to the fabled land hoping they can undo any damage they've done. Once there, however, the children discover things are even worse than they imagined.

Not only has the Wicked Witch taken control of Oz, Douglas Stanford is now recruiting an army of storybook villains to help him obtain the magic hidden within Astoria's library. The Librarian will need the children's help once more if he's going to protect the library's power from those who intend to exploit it.

My word,

The author sure took this to a much darker place. In no way would no let my children read this until they were much older. I'm 36 and can't believe the things that were written in this book.

The first book was light hearted and child appropriate..this one...well just take a look at these examples taken directly from this book....these are just 2 of MANY

"Taylor squeezed her eyes shut, but there was nothing she could do to counter the sounds of tearing flesh, breaking bones and her mother's heartbreaking scr—"

"The Tinman buried the massive hammer in his chest again, and this time, bones and skin were broken. Blood gushed from a wound where broken ribs had torn through the Wheeler's chest."

I don't see how anyone could write that thinking it would be child appropriate..... there is no way I would EVER continue to read the rest of the books in the series if they were ever published.

The Librarian Book Two Unhappily Ever After edition by Eric Hobbs Children eBooks Reviews

How creative to build a series around an adventure within stories we know and love..in this installment it's.the Wizard of Oz. I could picture it all and was completely mesmerized. I couldn't put it down. The story gains momentum and before you know it the book is done. So much fun.
I thoroughly enjoy The Librarian series. The books are short, entertaining, and provide an interesting perspective on classic literature. The relationship between the main characters could be more fully developed, but I assume that development will continue as the series advances. All in all, the books are well-written, exciting romps that are entertaining for adults and children alike. This book in particular explores the Land of Oz, the one in the Baum's books. It has all the trappings of a good tale, good guys with flaws, bad guys, bad guys with second thoughts, and exciting turns of events that may change loved literature forever.

While these books are a series, it is nice that not all problems can be fixed, and trying to fix one problem often results in disastrous, unforeseen consequences. I get really tired of pat endings where everything is tied up in a neat bow, and all wrongs are put right. This book and its predecessor succeed in recognizing that not all wrongs can be put right, even with the best of intentions. Refreshing!
middle-grades, fantasy, witches, wizard, paranormal

I really liked this one, but think it is for a slightly older crowd than the first one. We raised a houseful of boys and now they've got boys in that bloodthirsty age group, so I think that they will gleefully enjoy reading it on their own or with friends. The story line picks up where the first one left off, and I surely wish I could find the next one!
Anyway, I have been reading this book (Librarian part 1 and 2) to my kids 7 and 9. They love it! It is very well written and Mr. Hobbs is really good at writing fast-paced action (Perhaps from his comic strip background)

I would have given it 5 stars except for two overly graphic parts (they are very short and can be skipped if a parent is reading) The two graphic sections are

1) The attack on the Wheelers was way too descriptive. Without any comments of my own, my daughter mentioned this troubled her more than a week later! (For parents reading, skip a sentence or two)

2) The attack on the archer is also too descriptive.(For parents reading, skip one sentence)

As you can probably tell, I did not skip the full-detail but wish I had! (Dad didn't know it would be so troubling to 7 and 9 year olds...) These overly descriptive parts should be removed to be appropriate for this book's younger audience.

One final suggestion I would also suggest that the Epilogue should include a brief description of Oz's return including a summary of what happened to The Tinman (Was he rejoined to his maiden?), The Lion (Did he discover his bravery?), The Scarecrow (Did he appreciate how his decisions saved OZ..again), etc. This way, the story can still be a cliffhanger but at least there is satisfaction of wrapping up one part of the story with a happy ending.
The Librarian concept is super clever and really resonates with the imaginative reader who is well-versed in the classic lit references *which both my kids are), for which it WOULD get a 5 stars. That said, I find even after the author's (much appreciated!!) bad language edits, I still have to read the book to my children because there are cut off bad words like "Oh sh-", as well as totally unnecessary (and IMO inappropriate) references to "electricity" in the attraction between the 12 year old(!!!) main characters, and the girl uses the expression "Oh my God" much too frequently which in our home gets edited to "Oh my gosh." My 8 year old is old enough to read over my shoulder, but my six year old is not so he misses my editing altogether, while she and I have had to talk about why I read it the way I do. It's definitely not a book I would have allowed them to read on their own (for which it would get 1 star), but since they do love the concept and they're still young enough to really enjoy being read aloud to, we have made it work for us.
2.5 stars? Book 2 of the series...though I don't see subsequent entries.

Taylor and Wes head back to Oz to try to fix their mistakes from Book 1, as their world has begun to change due to the changes in Oz...not just little stuff like the texts, but also personalities and life-altering details. The Librarian is in there, as well as the bully and bad guys from Book 1. Hobbs starts to give the bully a change of heart based on his interactions with his dad, who acts differently in this new world, but it's incomplete.
Book 2 is much darker than Book 1...no longer a suitable bedtime story, unfortunately. Curious as to whether Hobbs will eventually continue the series, as it's not wrapped up but it's been a while since 2 came out.
