"What's Hallowe'en mean, Father?" asked Thomas Brown as the family was seated at breakfast one morning late in October. "It means the evening before All Saints Day," answered Father Brown. "Do you remember what fun we had last year, Chuck?" remarked Toad, for Thomas was called "Toad" by his friends, and Charley was known as "Chuck." "I should say I do," he answered. The Browns had always lived in the town of Merryvale in a large, white house, set far back from the street, and not far away was the home of Toad's best friend Reddy and his brother Frank nick-named "Fat."

Hallowe'en at Merryvale Alice Hale Burnett 9781492173915 Books

This is a fun little story about a boy whose birthday was close to Halloween so his mother said he could have his party on Halloween if he wanted. He was thrilled and invited his friends to come. Everyone had a grand old time playing games and winning prizes. Lots of fun and laughter for all.

Although not a current story, this tale is a delightful look at a different era and the fun that could be had even then. Highlights some of the activities enjoyed decades ago - many of which are still used at Halloween parties today.

A quick read, this is a clean story that children can manage easily. Nothing offensive about it.

Hallowe'en at Merryvale Alice Hale Burnett 9781492173915 Books Reviews

If you love to read a book around the holidays; this is a great book to read around Halloween. It also had a great price.
I bought this book for my daughters kindle, and i ended up reading it too. She enjoyed it too, she is the reader in the family.
Dated book (it was published in the early 20th century) about a boy celebrating his birthday and Halloween on the same day. He invites his chums (actual word used) to his house for a party. The proper language the boys use is quite amusing. They play fortune telling games, and look for dimes in the birthday cake. Short read--only 43 pgs.
"Hallowe'en at Merryvale" is a children's book written for a short series of books with the same continuing characters. The writing is squarely aimed at the 7-9 year old range, and was written in 1916 in the style of children's books of the time.

The book is far more useful as an historical curiosity than as any great example of literature. Series of books such as "Hallowe'en at Merryvale" belongs to were standard for their day, and provide a window into the past for the modern reader. There are even some original, vintage ads for other books in the series and other similar titles from the publisher included at the end, a real hoot!

The story involves a child wishing his birthday was on Hallowe'en, so he could invite his pals over for a party. Mom and Dad say, "Eh, why not?" Soon, the boy and his brother are preparing for a spooky celebration, and hosting their friends at the fun-filled fright-fest.

Hallowe'en enthusiasts will enjoy the details of the party, and especially the Hallowe'en-themed party games the children play, most of which are unknown to modern families.

This is how your great-grandfather celebrated Hallowe'en when he was a little boy!
